Mesothelioma Stages Information

When it comes to the treatment of mesothelioma, you need to know about the mesothelioma stages. The pleural mesothelioma stages are different to the staging of peritoneal mesothelioma stages.

Pleural Mesothelioma Stages

There are two staging systems in use for pleural mesothelioma stages - the TNM system and the Brighan system.

TNM System

TNM system is the more common method fo cancer staging. THM variables of Tumor (T), Lymph Nodes (N), Metastasis (M). Stage 1 is the earliest stage and stage 4 is the most advanced stage.

Stage I: Mesothelioma has affected on one layer of the pleura. though it may have grown into the heart (pericardium) and diaphragm cover.
Stage II: Mesothelioma has affected on both layers of the pleura, but it is on one side of the body only.
Stage III: Mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall, food pipe (esophagus), or even the lymph nodes on one side of the chest.
Stage IV: This is an advance stage of mesothelioma. At this stage, mesothelioma has gone to the bloodstream and other organs in the body including liver, brain, bone, or to the lymph nodes on another side of the chest.

Brighan System

This staging is based on whether the mesothelioma can be removed by surgery and if the lymph nodes are involved or not. Also there are four stages in the Brighan system:

Stage I: In this stage, mesothelioma can be removed with surgery and lymph nodes have not been affected.
Stage II: Mesothelioma can be removed with surgery, but their are lymph nodes containing cancer cells.
Stage III: Mesothelioma cannot be removed with surgery since the heart and the chest wall or even the peritoneum have been affected. There may or may not be lymph nodes containing cancer cells.
Stage IV: Mesothelioma has affected the bloodstream and the heart, brain, bone, and liver.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Stages

There is no established staging system for peritoneal mesothelioma. Whatever staging of cancer that is staged is done by the TNM system. The TNM system is the most commonly used staging system in cancer.
